Hey there, sports fans!
Wouldn't you know it, we survived week one of NFL football! There are a lot of changes coming into the league this year - rookie quarterbacks earning their salt, fair catches always coming to the 25 yard line, and the number 0 is now a legal jersey number. Well, I'll just say that while there may be zeroes in the league, you all are heroes in my book. Let's get into the recap!
Let's open up with our very first household match of the season - the newly renamed Be Curious Not Judgmental and Panic and Snooze. This one came down to the late window of games and Monday night, as well as some surprises of the "past utilization does not predict future performance" variety. Who knew Calvin Ridley and Jakobi Meyers had hands, huh? Regardless, Stefon Diggs was an "old reliable" for BCNJ, coming strong out of the gate with over 100 receiving yards and a TD. PAS had a tough matchup and a tough week with a crew of great players who seemed to be shaking off the summer break dust. BCNJ came out with a win and with the highest points total of the week. Good job to you both!
Next was the absolute rollercoaster of a match between PasswordIsTACO and Zip Zop Zooies. After experiencing some early window game pain and some completely inexplicable clownery from Joe Burrow and his Cincinnati Bengals, ZZZ looked to be down for the count. That is until Tyreek Hill showed up like a knight in shining shoulder pads, more than ready to achieve his goal of 2,000 receiving yards this season. His 215 receiving yards and 2 TDs brought ZZZ back from grave. Throw in Bijan Robinson's mighty debut for the Atlanta Falcons, and TACO was just out of luck this week. TACO got a great return on investment from Justin Jefferson, but sometimes, well, Tyreek Hill just happens. Well done, you two!
Third up we have what I'll call the "bad luck" match up of the week between East Side Believers and No Punt Intended. NPI drafted absolute tight end magic - Travis Kelce and Mark Andrews to back him up. And what happens right before the season opener? Kelce is out. And then what happens again just before the early window opens on Sunday? Andrews is down for the count too. Absolutely brutal. The bright spot of NPI's week was certain the Dallas defense. No, I'm not making this up or being mean - the Cowboys absolutely tap danced all over the Giants, and the defense alone came away with 2 interceptions, 2 TDs, and a shut out that netted NPI 35 freaking points. But consistency was the name of ESB's weekend, and Austin Ekeler's 26.4 points was enough to secure the W. I can tell you this though - dollars to donuts, Brandon Aiyuk is in NPI's starting line up next week, and when that happens, watch out! Nice match, folks!
Fourth and finally, we have what I have to call the "worst luck" match up of the week. Rubber City Roughnecks went against AdamBlowsGoats-HaveProof (still sticking with that name, huh?), and unfortunately for RCR, it was nonstop pain. First of all, if someone had said on Sunday morning, "You should start Deshaun Watson over Lamar Jackson," you probably would have asked that person what they were smoking and if you could have some. But the Browns thrashed the Bengals, and the Ravens leaned on the running game, so what can you do. And then there was the absolute agony of the two missed field goals by Graham Gano to contribute to the Cowboys shutting out the Giants, and the Dolphin's defense absolute slug out against the Chargers, and it all adds up to a weekend to forget. ABG-HP, meanwhile, cashed in greatly on their first round draft pick Christian McCaffrey, who made a 65 yard run for the endzone. There was a heartstopping moment for Chris Olave and a potential injury, and the blow of losing J.K. Dobbins for the rest of the season, but it was enough for an ABG-HP victory this week. Great game! And seriously, RCR - be a goldfish!
Well, that just about does it for week one. As we work out all the back to school nerves on the field, it's just a matter of time before everyone gets back up to full speed. I, for one, can't wait until we're all just cruising, top down, wind in our hair, Spice Girls on the radio. To everyone who won this week, congratulations! To everyone else, don't be Wannabes, because week two starts now.
Hugs & Kisses,
Your Commish
